What is it?  The peppermint plant is produced by breeding the spearmint plant with a plant called water mint. The two main active ingredients in peppermint essential oil that give it it’s specific properties are menthol (which is 50%-60% of the oil) and menthone (which is 10%-30% of the oil).

How is the essential oil extracted from the plant?  The two most common methods are cold extraction and CO2 extraction. Only the fresh part of the flowering plant that is above ground is used, not roots.

How long has peppermint essential oil been used for all of it’s benefits? The use of peppermint oil for it’s medicinal properties has been documented in ancient Chinese and Japanese medicine. So it’s been used for it’s amazing beneficial properties for thousands of years.

How does peppermint help you lose weight? What’s the evidence? There are two main ways peppermint essential oil helps you lose weight:

Peppermint essential oil decreases your appetite and decreases your levels of hunger.

A scientific study conducted by Wheeling Jesuit University(1) found that even just smelling peppermint oil has a significant effect on weight loss. One group of participants in the study were asked to sniff the scent of peppermint oil every two hours and another group of participants were asked not to sniff any peppermint at all and the two groups were then compared after a few weeks. The group that sniffed the scent of peppermint oil every two hours were reported to experience fewer hunger pains and cravings. The smell of the peppermint distracts you from cravings and hunger so you’re less likely to overeat or binge eat or eat out of boredom. But how much weight can you really lose just by sniffing peppermint essential oil? It’s just a smell after all, can it really have that much of an effect on your weight loss journey? Yes it absolutely can according to the study the weight lost would be quite a lot actually! The participants who sniffed peppermint oil every two hours ended up eating 2,800 fewer calories per week, which is enough to lose about a pound per week. That’s losing over 5 pounds per month! Keep in mind how incredible that is when you consider that the participants didn’t add any other weight loss activity to their routine, no crazy starvation diet, no ridiculously difficult exercise regimen, nothing extra at all! Just sniffing the scent of peppermint every 2 hours! I’d say that’s pretty incredible. Here is the link to the scientific study conducted by Wheeling Jesuit Univeristy.

How To Use The Smell of Peppermint Essential Oil for Weight Loss

The easiest way to use the scientifically proven benefits of the smell of peppermint oil for weight loss is to make your own peppermint weight loss aromatherapy station.

I recommend making this station somewhere that’s easily accessible like at your work desk or on a side table near your bed or couch.

You will need:

Set up the diffuser at your chosen location according to instructions. Add 5-8 drops of essential oil. Be sure to inhale deeply so as to breathe in the aroma thoroughly. I don’t recommend leaving the diffuser on because you can become desensathized to the smell and it might lose it’s full efficacy. I recommend turning it on and breathing in the aroma deeply for 5 to 10 minutes and turning it off, then repeating the process every 2 hours.

If you’re on the go and can’t use a diffuser at work or at home, then this next trick works wonderfully too.

You will need:

Put 8-10 drops of peppermint essential oil onto a small cotton ball and place the cotton ball inside a sachet so you can easily carry it around or throw it in your purse if you’re on the go. Just take out the sachet every 2 hours and inhale the aroma deeply for a good 30 seconds to 1 minute. Repeat every 2 hours.

Peppermint oil improves exercise performance and increases energy.

The Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine published a study on how ingesting peppermint essential oil effects exercise performance(2). Researchers conducting the study divided a group of 30 college aged men into 2 groups. One group was given an oral dose of peppermint essential oil and one group was not. Afterwards, measurements were taken on the physiological parameters and exercise performance for each group.   The researchers found that there was significant improvement in all the variables that were measured during exercise. First, they found that the peppermint oil group showed a significant increase in the amount of air they exhaled from their lungs, which means their breathing improved greatly, this in turn means that more fat is likely to be burned as oxygen is the fuel which allows our bodies to burn fat during exercise. Peppermint has an effect on the bronchial smooth muscles which allows you to breathe deeper and better during exercise. The grip force and strength of the peppermint group also increased significantly, it increased more and more incrementally. When doing standing long jumps  and vertical jumps the peppermint group did both significantly better and with more strength thus burning more calories. To sum it up, the ingestion of peppermint essential oil significantly increased the energy levels of the participants allowing them to exercise harder and better all while breathing more deeply and efficiently, which in turn allows people who ingest peppermint essential oil to burn more calories and lose more fat. How to Make Your Own Peppermint Weight Loss Drink

Drink this 30- 45 minutes before exercising or drink it before a nice walk outside. Either way it will help you burn more calories than you usually would.

You will need:

Make the tea according to the package directions. Add 1-2 drops of the food grade peppermint oil into the tea and enjoy! This is best used as a pre-workout drink for it’s full efficacy.
